Michael T. Dimmitt '62

Michael's train reached the last Station #73 on February 7, 2018. This very handsome, 6'2" man with his gold rim glasses was a quiet observer of people and situations. Daily, he read the paper and numerous other publications as well as watching various news, military and political programs. Michael's innate interest in U.S. and World history and events coupled with his keen sense for detail and a great memory made him the perfect travel companion and political debater. Michael himself was a participant in a historical event where he was captured in the crowd photo greeting President & Mrs. John Kennedy when they arrived at Love Field in Dallas, Texas on the day President Kennedy died. This photo was published in many books and displayed in the Sixth Floor Museum, Dallas, Texas. A dry sense of humor sweetened Michael's intellectual two word comments that he was known for among his family, friends and coworkers. Michael's tenacious loyalty to his family, friends and coworkers created an unquestionable sense of strength, trust and reliability. He was a loving man, as he always told his family how much he loved them. Michael came into this world on May 20, 1944. St. Louis, Missouri was his home for the first 12 years of his life, but then his father's job moved them to Dallas, Texas. Here Michael demonstrated his love for dogs, spoiling his first dog, Shadow. During these younger years, Michael had a newspaper route and saved his earnings to buy items for his bike or dog. Michael graduated from Jesuit High School in 1962 and completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History at the University of Dallas in 1966. He was accepted into St. Mary's Law School in San Antonio, Texas, but had to turn it down as he had received a draft notice because of the war in Vietnam. As a result, he decided to enter Officer Training School for the U.S. Air Force. After completing his training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and he trained to be an Office of Special Investigations (OSI) Agent. At his 1st assignment, Richards-Gebaur AFB in Kansas City, Missouri, Michael met a student nurse. Within four months they were married. Michael was stateside for four more months before a year long isolated tour at Nakhon Phanom (NKP), Thailand. Fortunately, Michael arranged for he and his new wife, Paula, to celebrate their 1st wedding anniversary in Bangkok, Thailand. His final assignment as an Air Force Captain was at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, Missouri and he then separated and received an Honorable Discharge. Michael then moved to Dallas, Texas with his wife and that was their home for 41 years and where they raised their only child, Michael Joseph. In Dallas, Michael decided on a career in teaching. He obtained a Master's Degree in Education at East Texas State University and began a 38 year long career as a Middle School Teacher with a specialty in Computer Technology in the Dallas Independent School District. On Teacher Appreciation Days, students would emulate Michael by wearing suspenders and telling elementary jokes. He retired in 2012 while he was a teacher at Harry Stone Middle School. This prompted the move to San Antonio, Texas to be close to Michael Joseph and his family, enjoy his grandchildren and pursue his lifelong interest in trains. Michael's father, paternal grandfather and great-grandfather worked for the KATY Railroad. Their homes were across or close to the railroad stations. Michael carried on their legacies during his retirement by learning all about trains, attending model railroad shows, traveling on trains all over the U.S.A. (with his willing wife) and building HO and G scale model railroads in his backyard. He loved animals, so throughout his life, he always had his dog accompany him on his daily walks. Michael was a loyal and loving husband to his wife, was a committed and loving father and father-in law to his son and daughter-in-law, and a loving grandfather to his two grandchildren. He was known by his extended family and friends for his gentleness to others and how much effort he made in loving and caring for every one (and every dog) that came in contact with him. He is survived by his wife of 49 1/2 years, Paula Jean Dimmitt (Mercier); son, Michael Joseph Dimmitt; daughter-in-law, Charlotte Leigh Dimmitt; grandson, Zachary Charles Dimmitt, and granddaughter, Sydney Nicole Dimmitt; many in-laws, nieces, a nephew and friends and family too numerous to list but not forgotten. Michael is now reunited with his parents, Thomas Raymond Dimmitt & Margaret Mary Dimmitt (Hanick) and brother, Thomas Patrick Dimmitt and numerous relatives.
