HAROLD FRANCIS TEHAN

HAROLD "HAL" FRANCIS TEHAN passed away on March 27, 2018. Hal was born on July 1, 1923 to Francis and Genevieve Tehan in Rock Falls, Illinois. He graduated from St. Mary High School (now known as Newman Central Catholic) in 1940 and then enrolled in his dream school of the University of Notre Dame. He volunteered for military service with the start of World War II and served in the United States Army. After intensive study of the German language at the University of Nebraska, he served bravely in Europe. After the war, Hal went back to Notre Dame and earned his law degree in 1948. Upon graduation, he worked one year for the University of Notre Dame and married Joan Patrice Hiss, who became his wife of 48 years and the mother of his three children. Hal and Joan were totally dedicated to one another. In 1949, Hal accepted employment with Haggar Slacks Company in Dallas, where he began a long-term friendship with the Haggar family and the many employees he worked with there for the next 32 years. In 1981, Hal left Haggar Company to become the Executive Director of what was then an unknown entity called The Catholic Foundation in Dallas. Hal worked tirelessly there until 1999 to solicit contributions, to educate the Catholic community about how their contributions could have a long-term impact on the Dallas community and to direct The Catholic Foundation to assist the Catholic community in every way possible. After the death of his wife Joan, Hal found another love in his life Jennifer Brodrick whom he married in 1998 and had enjoyed life with for the next 20 years. Hal was a devoted Catholic his entire life, being a member of numerous Catholic organizations, i.e., Knights of Columbus, Sierra Club of Dallas, Knights of Malta, etc. He was a long-time member of various parishes during his life including St. Monica Catholic Church, St. Rita Catholic Church and All Saints Catholic Church. Hal received numerous honors during his life including Notre Dame Club of Dallas Man of the Year, the Jesuit Foundation Man of the Year and The Catholic Foundation Man of the Year. Hal was a generous man and a strong supporter of Catholic education. He began the first Teacher of the Year Awards at Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas and at Ursuline Academy of Dallas to express gratitude to the faculty members for their efforts and sacrifices in educating the young men and women who attend those schools. Hal had an enthusiasm for life that never diminished even after a severe stroke in March, 2016. He loved to play golf, to enjoy dinner with friends and, most of all, to enjoy his family. Hal is predeceased in death by his parents, Francis and Genevieve Tehan, his first wife Joan Tehan, his brother Donald Tehan and his wife Maria Tehan. Hal is survived by his wife Jennifer, his three children Maureen Tehan Moreland (Charlie), Timothy Tehan (June) and Brian Tehan (Melissa), his nine grandchildren Kelly Graham (Adam), Colleen Vozeh, Shannon Biddle (Hank), Terin Tehan, Kevin Tehan, Patrick Tehan, Sean Tehan, Ethan Tehan, Breanne Tehan, three great-grandchildren Benjamin Graham, Luke Graham and Ava Vozeh, his four step-children Charles Brodrick (Tammy), Angela Donahue (Tom), David Brodrick (Jill) and John Brodrick (Alexandra), and eight step-grandchildren, together with three nephews and three nieces.
