Sheila Turner Peters

Sheila Turner Peters passed away on April 3, 2018. Sheila was born on October 29, 1937 in Dallas, Texas to Dorothy Brown Turner and Lovell Metcalfe Turner, Sr. She grew up on Mockingbird Lane in Highland Park and graduated with honors from Highland Park High School in 1955. She attended Southern Methodist University before joining the family business, J. Elmer Turner Realtors now, a fifth-generation family business which continues to operate as one of Dallas' oldest family-owned and operated businesses. Sheila remained close with her childhood and high school friends, and gathered many more along her journey. She especially enjoyed making memories with "the Divas." As a third-generation Dallas Woman's Club member, she enjoyed umpteen field trips and supported historic preservation. Sheila married Paul J. Peters, Jr. and together they raised five children on a street surrounded by a close-knit group of parents and children. She was often consulted by other moms about injuries and ailments as she led the block in number of children. When the twins were born, the brood totaled five, aged five and under. Sheila inherited the entrepreneur spirit, always having a venture in the works. She eventually founded her own company, Premier Lighting, selling high-end lighting fixtures and controls in Texas and across the country. Sheila had a never-ending passion for learning and was a voracious reader, reading at least one newspaper daily. Always attracted to the written word, she read numerous books a week, every label in a museum, and even the backs of cereal boxes. She was a lover of history, art, and travel. Always curious, she engaged everyone she could in conversation, exchanging short quips or long accounts of life histories and adventures. Sheila was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy and Lovell Turner, Sr.; her brother, Lovell Turner, Jr.; her husband of 42 years, Paul Peters, Jr.; and a newborn son. She is survived by her children: son, Chris Peters; son David Peters, his wife Michele, and their children Piper and Thrash; daughter Dede Peters (Fayetteville, Ark.); daughter Lizzie Wiener (Belvedere, Calif.), her husband David Wiener, and their children Stella, Cece, and Luke; son, Charlie Peters; her brother, Charlie Turner; numerous Turner family nieces and nephews; her well-loved cats, Mia and Nimbus; and an abundance of friends. Sheila was especially grateful for the care and camaraderie of her doctors, their staff, and caretakers. She passed due to complications of metastatic breast cancer. In lieu of flowers, Sheila has requested donations be made to the Salvation Army, Union Gospel Mission of Dallas, Wounded Warriors Project, or organization of your choice. A memorial mass will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church (8017 Preston Road, Dallas) on Monday, April 9 at 1 p.m. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
