MARK V. FREZZO '86 Born in Pequannock, New Jersey. Beloved son of Marie and Dennis; brother of Dennis and Chris; brother-in-law of Akiko and Caroline; long-term friend of Carol; nephew and cousin to our dear family in Michigan. Predeceased by sister Alison and brother Mike. Mark graduated from the Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas (high school, 1986), Colorado College (BA, Comparative Literature, 1990), Université Paris 8 (MA, Philosophy, 1996), and Binghamton University (MA, Sociology, 1999; PhD, Sociology, 2003). He spent his whole life learning, and much of his life teaching, serving as an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Florida Atlantic University (2003-2010) and Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Mississippi (2010-2020). As a scholar and author, Mark's interests included the sociology of human rights. As a teacher, he taught many different courses, and was loved by his many students. In person, he was soft-spoken, gentle, humble, generous, funny, and deeply committed to non-violence. He loved drumming, the history of music, baseball, animals, and the quest for justice and peace. His brothers and parents cannot imagine life without him and the light he brought to our, and other's, lives. The 1968 eulogy for RFK expresses a bit of how we feel about Mark today: "Those of us who loved him and who take him to his rest today, pray that what he was to us, and what he wished for others, will some day come to pass for all the world …. Some men see things as they are and say why. I dream things that never were and say why not." And from the Bellamy Brothers 1976 "Let Your Love Flow": "Let your love fly Like a bird on a wing And let your love bind you To all living things" In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Mark's name to one of the following: Project Learn Belize, a University of San Francisco project: https://learnbelize.com/" or Sociology of Human Rights" in the memo line.
