Joan Carol Dubose Owen age 78 of Richardson, Texas was born on October 5, 1944 in Corpus Christi, Texas. She passed peacefully at home with family by her side on February 9, 2023 from complications with carcinoid syndrome.
Joan was the oldest of four girls born to Clarence and Evelyn Dubose. She grew up in Alice, Texas where she attended St. Elizabeth's School and Alice High School, where she graduated near the top of her class in 1962. She attended Texas A & I University where she studied accounting. After leaving college she worked for Dr. Quintin Williams, an early pioneer of children's dentistry and surgery to correct clef palates. In February of 1967, on a blind date, she met Verne (Vic) Owen, a Navy pilot. They were married eight weeks later and stationed overseas in Rota, Spain. The loving mother of three children, twins Jennifer and Margaret and son Andrew, Joan supported her children in pursing their interests. She was a Cub Scout leader, a soccer coach, and occasional theatre carpenter in support of their endeavors. She often became friends with the friends of her children. Joan's faith was a cornerstone of her life. As a member of St. Mark's parish in Plano, TX, she served as a Eucharistic minister and Sunday school teacher, and for over the last twenty years she has been a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Dallas. For 30 years she was the office manager and bookkeeper for CPA firms, MacIver, Owen and Bell and Owen and Associates. Joan was an avid gardener and a gifted seamstress. She loved music, eating fresh shrimp on the Gulf Coast, and spending days with her family. Joan is preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Evelyn Dubose and her sisters, Doris Wright and Shirly Greer. She is survived by her sister Linda Lane, 12 nieces and nephews, her husband of 55 years Verne (Vic) Owen and their three children, daughters Jennifer Owen and Margaret Steele and son, Andrew Owen; son-in-law Rick Steele; grandchildren Ryan Steele and wife Hannah Steele and her great-granddaughter Annabeth Steele, who Joan referred to as "that magical child," grandson Christopher Steele, and granddaughter Mackenzie Steele.
While flowers are appreciated, should you wish to make a donation, Smile Train is a charity that was close to Joan's heart as it provides surgeries for children around the world to correct the disfigurement of clef palates.
