Students will engage in discussions about research techniques and validity, human impacts on coral reefs and Caribbean marine ecosystems, fish identification and anatomy, and the application of science. This course is hands-on and will include research projects, video diaries, blog submissions, and group activities. It will incorporate content and understandings from previous science experiences. This summer-only course will take place on the Jesuit Dallas campus and the British Virgin Islands.
Curricular Overview:
Week 1: Students spend time learning about currents and how they influence climate. They will also learn about substrates present in the ocean and how they are related to marine and terrestrial life. They will do research on the interdependencies that exist within and with marine ecosystems. Projects and labs are the primary tool for learning Week 2: Students will learn about organisms and the way by which they function and coexist in the ocean. This will include dissections on vertebrates and invertebrates. Research techniques will be introduced and explored.
Week 3: Students will participate in 9-11 dives and snorkels with a research project in mind. They will complete their research project during the week while also participating in turtle tagging, Jesuit coral reef restoration, service projects, and prayer services. Students will also have the opportunity to do artificial reef diving (wreck dives) and night experiences (e.g., snorkel or dive).
Students participating are expected to complete a PADI or SSI certification program before leaving.

Airfare is secured through Jesuit via a group rate. It ranges from $900 to $1,100.
Students are required to have a passport
Students are expected to pursue PADI or SSI certification. This can range between $200 and $600 depending on location and certifications obtained. Minimum certification is Open Water. Jesuit will coordinate SCUBA certification in the Segal Aquatic Center on the Jesuit Dallas campus.
