Urban Plunge

The Dallas Urban Plunge experience is a daily leadership service and justice program being offered this summer (2022 dates TBD) . Using a combination of direct service and guided reflection, it provides a unique opportunity to experience social injustice in our own city. Students are given an opportunity to make a direct impact at several different organizations and agencies that serve as some of our most important community partners. These organizations include Catholic Charities, the Resource Center of Dallas, elder care facilities,  Austin Street Center, Incarnation House, and others. At the conclusion of each day students have the opportunity to reflect and pray with their fellow classmates while discussing ways that they can work to improve the lives of the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized in our community.  Rising sophomores and juniors can complete the program to satisfy their grade level service and justice experience requirement. Throughout the week, students will engage with the themes of Catholic Social Teaching through reflection, prayer, and discussion. Each day, we will prepare, serve, and enjoy a meals and/or fellowship time with a variety of marginalized populations in the city, while making new friends and better understanding the challenges that are faced by many of our neighbors. In order to complete the grade level requirement, students must:

• Commit to the entire program for their specific grade level

(note that rising sophomores program includes three half days in afternoon that do not interfere with summer school, as well as one full day on Saturday)
(note that rising juniors program is Monday to Friday, approximately 8 hours per a day)

• For rising sophomores, participation in the program will also require several follow-up lunch meetings to discuss the program themes.  This will replace their social justice guidance period practicum commitment during the school year.
• Complete the journal (reflective educational piece)

Program cost is 400 dollars.  Financial aid is available.
