Senior Alex de la Cerda ’25 helped gift Jesuit Dallas its newest unofficial mascots in Apollo and Bill, the blue and gold poison dart frogs who live in the vivarium outside the science commons, while his enthusiastic dedication to wildlife and the environment extends to his academic pursuits and exemplary work in the community. Recently, Alex was named the 2024 Junior Rookie of the Year by the Equest organization for his commitment to the program and client care.
“Alex joined Equest in the past year, learned fast, worked hard, and demonstrated exceptional enthusiasm and dedication, giving much of his time and energy,” announced Equest’s volunteer director in presenting the Junior Rookie of the Year award. “He is eager to learn and asks amazing questions. He has made an immediate impact on our Wednesday clients, and the instructors and therapists love to work with him!”
A leader in the environmental club, Alex helped install a habitat and continues to care for Jesuit’s Ranger-colored amphibians. Last spring, he was awarded The Chatham University Rachel Carson Healthy Planet Award for his focus on environmental ethics and leadership. He is also a member of the Quiz Bowl (where he can answer even the most obscure questions related to animal life) and part of the Jesuit film club.
“Alex is a passionate and thoughtful student,” noted a member of the faculty. “His dedication to wildlife and the environment is evident even in my psychology class and I look forward to his energetic presence in class.” Another nomination added, “Alex rocks! He always brings positive energy to class and participates enthusiastically in discussions. He has a deep thirst for knowledge and is an excellent student.”
Congratulations to Alex de la Cerda ’25, Jesuit Dallas Ranger of the Week!
